Overview of the Route

Discover the diverse landscapes of Arusha National Park, a compact yet incredibly scenic park located just 45 minutes from Arusha city. This underrated gem offers stunning views of Mount Meru, crater lakes, lush montane forests, and open grasslands - all in one day. The park is home to diverse wildlife including giraffes, zebras, buffalos, warthogs, and various monkey species including the striking black and white colobus monkey. Flamingos often gather at the Momella Lakes, creating a picturesque pink display against the mountain backdrop. A highlight of this tour is the optional walking safari, allowing you to explore the park on foot with an armed ranger - something not possible in most other Tanzanian parks. This is an excellent introduction to East African wildlife and perfect for those with limited time.

Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

07:00 - Pick up from your Arusha hotel after breakfast. Drive 45 minutes to Arusha National Park, one of Tanzania's most beautiful and diverse parks despite its compact size. 08:00 - Enter the park and begin game viewing. The park is home to giraffes, zebras, buffalo, warthogs, blue monkeys, and the rare black-and-white colobus monkeys with distinctive long white tails. 09:30 - Walking safari with an armed ranger - an exciting opportunity to experience nature on foot, learning about tracks, plants, medicinal herbs, and smaller creatures. Get close to giraffes and zebras while maintaining safe distances. 11:00 - Continue game drive to Momella Lakes, a series of shallow alkaline lakes each with different algae giving them distinct colors. Excellent birdwatching with flamingos, pelicans, herons, and numerous waterbirds. 12:30 - Picnic lunch at a scenic viewpoint with views of Mount Meru, Africa's fifth-highest mountain. 13:30 - Drive to Ngurdoto Crater, often called "Little Ngorongoro." View the pristine crater floor from the rim - the crater is protected and no vehicles descend, preserving its untouched nature. Watch buffalo, warthogs, and baboons on the crater floor. 15:00 - Final game drive through the park's varied habitats including montane forest, acacia woodland, and swamps. Look for leopards, spotted hyenas, and the park's diverse birdlife (over 400 species recorded). 16:30 - Exit the park and drive back to Arusha. 17:30 - Drop off at your hotel with wonderful memories of Tanzania's wildlife and landscapes.
