Mount Kilimanjaro Day Hike to Shira Plateau
Experience Kilimanjaro's alpine zone with stunning views of Kibo peak.
Overview of the Route
Experience the magic of Mount Kilimanjaro without a multi-day trek on this challenging day hike to the Shira Plateau. Starting from Londorossi Gate on the mountain's western side, you'll drive through the rainforest zone before beginning your hike at around 3,500m elevation. The Shira Plateau is a spectacular high-altitude moorland that was once a volcanic crater. The landscape here is otherworldly, with giant groundsels and lobelias dotting the heath zone, and dramatic views of Kibo peak on clear days. This hike is physically demanding due to the altitude and is best suited for fit individuals. It offers a taste of what Kilimanjaro climbers experience and serves as excellent acclimatization for those preparing for a summit attempt.

06:00 - Early morning pick up from your Moshi hotel. This full-day hike offers an incredible opportunity to experience Kilimanjaro without committing to a multi-day climb. Drive approximately 3 hours to Londorossi Gate (2,100m) on Kilimanjaro's western side. 09:00 - Register at the gate and meet your mountain guide. Continue by 4WD vehicle through montane forest to Moram Barrier, watching for wildlife including colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and birds. 10:00 - Begin hiking from the moorland zone (approximately 3,500m) across the spectacular Shira Plateau, one of the world's highest plateaus. The landscape is dramatic with volcanic rock formations, heather, and otherworldly giant groundsels and lobelias. 11:00 - Hike across the plateau with stunning views of Kibo Peak (Kilimanjaro's summit) ahead and the surrounding plains far below. The altitude makes the hiking challenging but rewarding. Your guide sets a comfortable pace and shares information about Kilimanjaro's geology, ecology, and climbing history. 12:30 - Picnic lunch at approximately 3,850m with panoramic views. On clear days, see Mount Meru and the plains stretching to the horizon. The volcanic landscape with scattered lava formations is unlike anywhere else. Look for endemic plants adapted to the extreme altitude. 15:00 - Begin descent and hike back to the vehicle pick-up point. The late afternoon light on Kilimanjaro creates perfect photography conditions. 16:00 - Drive back down through the forest and moorland zones, descending through climate zones you ascended earlier. 19:00 - Arrive back in Moshi.
