Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

The Shira Route begins unusually as you drive to Shira Gate at 3,600m, one of the highest starting points on Kilimanjaro. This means you start already at high altitude, which can be challenging but saves time. From the gate, trek across the spectacular Shira Plateau, one of the world's largest high-altitude plateaus. The landscape is open and volcanic with stunning views of Kibo Peak. The relatively short walking distance allows your body to begin adjusting to the altitude. Shira Camp 1 (3,500m) actually sits slightly lower than your starting point, aiding acclimatization. The sunset views across the plateau are magnificent.

Today's trek continues across the Shira Plateau, an ancient volcanic caldera. The walking is gentle with gradual elevation gain, perfect for acclimatization at this altitude. You pass interesting geological formations including ancient lava flows and volcanic rocks. The plateau's unique high-altitude ecosystem supports hardy plants and occasional wildlife. Views in all directions are spectacular - Kibo towering above, Mawenzi to the east, and endless horizons to the west. Shira Camp 2 (3,850m) is positioned with excellent views of the Western Breach and Kibo's glaciated flanks.

A critical acclimatization day as you trek to Lava Tower (4,630m) and then descend to sleep lower - the classic "climb high, sleep low" strategy. Leave the Shira Plateau and climb through increasingly barren alpine desert toward the massive Lava Tower volcanic formation. The air is thin and you may feel altitude effects. After lunch and acclimatization at Lava Tower, descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley filled with giant groundsels and lobelias. The descent helps your body adjust while you enjoy changing landscapes. Barranco Camp (3,960m) sits beneath the impressive Barranco Wall.

Start with the exciting scramble up the Great Barranco Wall, a 257-meter rock face that requires using hands and feet. No technical skills needed but it's exhilarating! From the top, traverse along ridges with spectacular views of the southern glaciers. The trail undulates through several valleys and over ridges as you work your way around to the southern flank of Kibo. Pass through Karanga Valley before the final climb to Barafu Camp (4,673m). This exposed camp sits on a rocky ridge. Arrive early afternoon to rest, check equipment, eat early dinner, and sleep before the midnight summit attempt.

Begin the summit push around midnight, climbing slowly through darkness with headlamps. The steep ascent through scree and volcanic gravel is physically and mentally challenging as the thin air makes breathing difficult. Push steadily toward Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim, typically reached at sunrise. The views of glaciers bathed in dawn light are spectacular. From Stella Point, follow the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) - standing on the Roof of Africa is an incredible achievement. After summit photos, descend carefully back to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) in the forest zone. This 11-15 hour day requires all your reserves.

Summit Day Tips

  • Start very early (midnight to 2 AM)
  • Dress in warm layers
  • Bring headlamp with extra batteries
  • Stay hydrated and maintain slow, steady pace

The final day is a descent through lush montane rainforest to Mweka Gate. The trail winds downward through increasingly dense vegetation - tree heathers give way to massive old-growth trees draped in moss and epiphytes. The air becomes noticeably warmer and richer with oxygen. Birds and monkeys are active in the canopy. The path can be muddy and slippery, so trekking poles are helpful. At Mweka Gate (1,640m), you'll sign out and receive your summit certificate. Your driver meets you here for the return to your hotel where a hot shower and celebration await.

Expert Tip

For first-time climbers, we strongly recommend the 7 or 8-day itinerary. The extra acclimatization time significantly increases your chances of reaching the summit and makes the experience more enjoyable. The 6-day option is better suited for experienced high-altitude trekkers.

Why Our Success Rates Are Higher

Optimal Acclimatization

Our itineraries are designed for maximum acclimatization, with gradual altitude gain and strategic rest days.

Experienced Guides

All our guides have 7+ years of experience and undergo regular training in wilderness first aid and high-altitude medicine.

Superior Equipment

We provide high-quality camping equipment, emergency oxygen, and comprehensive medical kits on every climb.

Twice-Daily Health Checks

Our guides monitor oxygen saturation and vital signs twice daily to catch altitude issues early.

Nutritious Meals

Our mountain cooks prepare fresh, high-calorie meals to keep your energy levels up and support acclimatization.

Flexible Pacing

We maintain the "pole pole" (slowly, slowly) philosophy, allowing your body time to adapt to the altitude.

⚠️Important Note

Why the 8-day option has a slightly lower success rate: The reason lies in the type of climbers it attracts. Many trained hikers choose the 6-day trek and, thanks to their skills, reach the summit despite the greater difficulty. In contrast, the 8-day trek is popular among beginners with no trekking experience at high altitudes. This lack of experience makes the climb more challenging for them, even on the route option that offers a better acclimatization profile.
