Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Begin at Londorossi Gate (2,100m) where you complete registration formalities. A scenic drive takes you through the rainforest to the trailhead at approximately 2,360m. The trek starts through pristine montane forest on Kilimanjaro's remote western slopes. The path winds gently upward through dense forest rich with wildlife - you may spot blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and various forest birds. The atmosphere is magical with ancient trees covered in moss and hanging lichen. Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750m) sits in a clearing surrounded by towering camphor trees.

As you climb higher, the forest gradually thins and transitions into the moorland zone. Giant heather and volcanic rock formations become more common as the canopy opens up. You cross the Shira Ridge and emerge onto the expansive Shira Plateau, one of the world's highest plateaus. The landscape transforms dramatically from forest to open high-altitude terrain. Shira Camp 1 (3,500m) offers magnificent views across the plateau toward Kibo Peak, especially during sunset when the mountain glows in golden light.

Today's gentle trek across the Shira Plateau is excellent for acclimatization. You walk eastward across ancient volcanic terrain, passing interesting rock formations and small seasonal streams. The relatively flat terrain allows your body to adapt to altitude while you enjoy 360-degree views. The plateau's unique ecosystem supports hardy alpine plants and occasional wildlife sightings. Shira Camp 2 (3,850m) provides spectacular views of the Western Breach glaciers and Kibo's summit cone towering above.

Following the crucial "climb high, sleep low" strategy, you trek toward Lava Tower (4,630m) through the stark alpine desert. The volcanic landscape becomes increasingly barren as you gain altitude. Lava Tower, a massive 300-foot volcanic plug, serves as an excellent acclimatization point. Many climbers experience mild altitude symptoms here. After lunch at Lava Tower, you descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley filled with giant senecios and lobelias. Barranco Camp (3,960m) sits beneath the imposing Great Barranco Wall.

Begin with an exhilarating scramble up the Great Barranco Wall. Despite its intimidating appearance, the 257-meter ascent is non-technical, though you'll need hands and feet for the scramble. The views from the top are spectacular, overlooking the route you've traveled. Continue along a scenic ridge path with constant views of Kilimanjaro's southern glaciers and ice fields. The trail undulates through several valleys and over ridges before reaching Karanga Camp (3,995m) in a protected valley setting, perfect for rest before the summit push.

The trail climbs steadily out of Karanga Valley through increasingly barren landscape. All vegetation disappears as you ascend into the high-altitude arctic desert zone. The rocky terrain becomes more exposed and windswept. Barafu Camp (4,673m), meaning "ice" in Swahili, sits on a narrow exposed ridge with dramatic drops on both sides. The views of Mawenzi Peak to the east and the summit above are awe-inspiring. Arrive early afternoon for rest, equipment preparation, briefing, and early dinner. Sleep a few hours before the midnight summit attempt.

Begin the summit push around midnight under a canopy of stars. The climb is steep and challenging through deep scree and loose volcanic rock. Each step requires determination as the thin air makes breathing difficult. Reach Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim at sunrise for spectacular views of the glaciers bathed in morning light. The final push along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) tests your mental resolve, but standing on the Roof of Africa makes it all worthwhile. After summit photos and celebration, descend to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down through moorland to Mweka Camp (3,100m). This 11-15 hour day is the ultimate test.

Expert Tip

For first-time climbers, we strongly recommend the 7 or 8-day itinerary. The extra acclimatization time significantly increases your chances of reaching the summit and makes the experience more enjoyable. The 6-day option is better suited for experienced high-altitude trekkers.

Why Our Success Rates Are Higher

Optimal Acclimatization

Our itineraries are designed for maximum acclimatization, with gradual altitude gain and strategic rest days.

Experienced Guides

All our guides have 7+ years of experience and undergo regular training in wilderness first aid and high-altitude medicine.

Superior Equipment

We provide high-quality camping equipment, emergency oxygen, and comprehensive medical kits on every climb.

Twice-Daily Health Checks

Our guides monitor oxygen saturation and vital signs twice daily to catch altitude issues early.

Nutritious Meals

Our mountain cooks prepare fresh, high-calorie meals to keep your energy levels up and support acclimatization.

Flexible Pacing

We maintain the "pole pole" (slowly, slowly) philosophy, allowing your body time to adapt to the altitude.

⚠️Important Note

Why the 8-day option has a slightly lower success rate: The reason lies in the type of climbers it attracts. Many trained hikers choose the 6-day trek and, thanks to their skills, reach the summit despite the greater difficulty. In contrast, the 8-day trek is popular among beginners with no trekking experience at high altitudes. This lack of experience makes the climb more challenging for them, even on the route option that offers a better acclimatization profile.
